Through luminous color, pattern, and symbolic abstraction, Karbassian constructs expansive visual worlds that move between memory, spirituality, and imagination.
Sheila Karbassianis an interdisciplinary artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who moved to Iran at the age of 12, four years into the Iran-Iraq War, post-1978 Islamic Revolution, contrary to what most Iranians were doing—leaving Iran. This journey has deeply influenced her expressive and diverse visual vocabulary, bringing into color and form the continued expansion and contraction of self-identity and existence. Modernity and tradition, being an immigrant, a woman, a mother, a widow, a survivor of loss, an observer of war, a partner, an Iranian, an American, and all other dimensions of being human are critical to her explorations.

About ModA Curations
ModA Curations is a creative organization bridging contemporary art and sociocultural anthropology. Functioning as a sub-entity of Modern Anthropology (ModA) Studios, LLC, ModA Curations operates virtually with in-person, bi-annual exhibitions, showing spring and fall in New York City and Los Angeles, respectively. ModA Studios was founded in the Fall of 2023 by Executive Director and Anthropologist Georgian “George” Fan.
