Opening Reception 6 - 9 PM, Tuesday, October 22, 2024 | On View October 22 - 26, 2024

Los Angeles, CA (September 10, 2024) – ModA Curations is pleased to announce its second exhibition of 2024, Hidden Narratives, hosted by Wonzimer Gallery and curated by Sia Fang, with production coordination by Irene Ashu of Studio93. This group exhibition explores untold stories from the lives of presenting artists, piecing together feelings of indescribable humanity and making sense of identity through their transferences and inheritances. The seven contemporary artists exhibited in this show come from a myriad of backgrounds. Their work aims to speak not only to their own experiences, but also to shared, human sentiments, connecting artist and audience through time and place.

Crucial narratives escape the archives. Through this exhibition, ModA uses ethnographic inquiry to explore the ways in which stories told through contemporary art reveal ourhumanity. Hidden Narratives will be on view at Wonzimer Gallery in downtown Los Angeles from October 22 – October 26, 2024, with an opening reception on October 22nd from 6-9 pm (RSVP here). Programming highlights include a workshop for press and institutional audiences on “The ModA Concept” on October 23rd and an Anthropology in Art workshop on October 24th. For more information, please visit moda-curations.com.

Hidden Narratives features the work of five main exhibiting contemporary artists: Quentin Fromont, Sheila Karbassian, Simon Kubik, Anna Ting Moller, and Antonio Vidal in the main gallery, and the works of John Wright ii and Puxuan Zhou as part of Untapped, the Collection. Throughout the exhibition, the relationships between heritage and self, myths and symbols, and intimacy and desire are explored through a variety of traditional and experimental mediums, such as acrylic and oil paintings, installations, and kombucha culture, to navigate complex personal narratives and meanings transcend from the works.

Founded by George Fan in October 2023, ModA Curations is a sub-entity of Modern Anthropology (ModA) Studios. ModA Curations was created to serve as a cultural archive, building a library of resistance, reclamation, and representation for contemporary artists, and presenting bi-annual exhibitions in a pop-up format. The directorial team, composed of career anthropologists versed in contemporary art and curation, recognizes the growing need for diverse and nuanced representation, and champions artists as authors of their own experiences. Guided by a philosophy grounded in socio-cultural anthropology, artists are empowered to regain agency in the valuation of their work by emphasizing the importance of cultural relativity in the understanding of their art.
